Trade Licensing in Western Australia

In Western Australia, Building and Energy (a division of DMIRS) regulates electrical, plumbing, gas and building licensing under the Electricity (Licensing) Regulations 1991, Plumbers Licensing Act 1995 and Building Services (Registration) Act 2011.

Licence Types in WA

Electrical Licence

Required for all electrical installation work in WA. Classes include Electrical Contractor, Electrical Worker and Electrical Inspector.

Plumbing Licence

Issued under the Plumbers Licensing Act 1995. Classes include Plumbing Contractor, Plumbing Worker and Plumbing Inspector.

Gas Fitting Licence

Required for gas installation and servicing. Issued alongside or as an endorsement of plumbing licensing.

Building Service Contractor Registration

For builders, painters, tilers and other building service contractors under the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011.

How to Apply for a Licence

    Complete trade qualification at an accredited RTO

    Accumulate required practical experience under a licensed practitioner

    Apply through the Building and Energy portal (MyLicence)

    Provide certified copies of qualifications and experience records

    Arrange public liability insurance

    Pay the application and licence fee

Licence Fees

Electrical worker fees are approximately $150 to $220 for a 3-year period. Building service contractor registration fees vary by category from approximately $200 to $600. Plumbing licence fees are approximately $170 to $250. Check the Building and Energy website for current amounts.

Renewal Requirements

Licences are generally issued for 1 or 3 year periods. Renewal notices are issued 60 days before expiry. Current insurance certificates must be provided. Some licence holders must demonstrate continuing professional development.
