Trade Licensing in Northern Territory

The Northern Territory regulates trade licensing across building, electrical and plumbing trades through NT Worksafe and Consumer Affairs. The Electrical Workers and Contractors Act and the Water Supply and Sewerage Act govern relevant trade work.

Licence Types in NT

Electrical Contractor Licence

Required to operate a business performing electrical work in the NT. Issued by NT Worksafe.

Electrical Workers Licence

Required for individuals performing electrical installation work. Multiple classes including Provisional, A Class and B Class.

Plumbing and Draining Licence

Required for plumbing, drainage and gas fitting work. Licensed through NT Worksafe.

Building Contractor Licence

Required for building construction and renovation work above the exemption threshold. Regulated through Consumer Affairs.

How to Apply for a Licence

Licence Fees

Electrical worker licence fees are approximately $140 to $200. Building contractor licence fees range from approximately $200 to $500. Plumbing licence fees are approximately $150 to $220. Fees may differ for remote area applications. Check NT Worksafe for current amounts.

Renewal Requirements

Licences are renewed on an annual or biennial basis. Renewal applications should be submitted before the expiry date. Insurance must remain current. The NT has some specific requirements for tradies working in remote communities.
