Trade Licensing in Victoria
Victoria uses a dual-authority system. The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) licenses builders and building practitioners. Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) licenses electricians and gas fitters. Plumbers are licensed through the VBA.

Licence Types in VIC
Domestic Builder (VBA)
Required for building work above $10,000 in Victoria. Classes include Unlimited, Limited and Commercial.
Electrician (ESV)
Registration with Energy Safe Victoria is required for all electrical work. Classes include Electrical Inspector, Electrical Contractor and Electrical Worker.
Plumber (VBA)
VBA registers plumbers under multiple classes: Plumbing, Drainage, Gasfitting, Roofplumbing, Mechanical Services and Water. A plumber may hold one or more classes.
Gas Worker (ESV)
Gas appliance work requires registration with Energy Safe Victoria under the Gas Safety Act 1997.
How to Apply for a Licence

Licence Fees
VBA registration fees vary: domestic builders pay between $200 and $600 depending on class and whether it is a new application or renewal. ESV electrician registration is approximately $240 for a 3-year registration. Check the VBA and ESV websites for current fees.
Renewal Requirements
VBA registrations are renewed every 3 years. ESV registrations are also 3-year cycles. CPD requirements apply particularly to building practitioners. Insurance must be current at time of renewal.
