Trade Licensing in New South Wales

In NSW, tradies in key regulated trades must be licensed through NSW Fair Trading under the Home Building Act 1989. This applies to contractors and tradespeople performing residential building work.

Licence Types in NSW

Contractor Licence

Required for businesses and individuals contracting to perform home building work. Includes builder, electrician, plumber, gas fitter, drainer and more.

Tradesperson Certificate

For tradies who work under a licensed contractor. Covers electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, air conditioning and refrigeration.

Owner Builder Permit

Required for homeowners who want to build or renovate their own home when the work value exceeds $10,000.

How to Apply for a Licence

    Complete the relevant trade qualification (Certificate III or higher)

    Accumulate the required practical experience under a licensed tradesperson

    Submit an application via Service NSW online or in person

    Provide evidence of qualifications, experience and identity documents

    Pass any required competency assessment if applicable

    Pay the licence application fee

  7. 7

    Obtain adequate public liability insurance before commencing work

Licence Fees

Contractor licence fees range from approximately $183 to $1,100 depending on the licence category and duration (1 or 3 years). Tradesperson certificate fees are approximately $91 to $124. Check the NSW Fair Trading website for current fee schedules.

Renewal Requirements

Licences must be renewed before expiry. Renewal applications can be submitted up to 90 days before the expiry date. Continuing professional development (CPD) requirements apply to some licence categories. A current certificate of currency for public liability insurance is required for renewal.

You can verify any NSW contractor licence or tradesperson certificate on the NSW Fair Trading licence check website. Search by licence number, business name or individual name. The register shows licence type, expiry date and any conditions or disciplinary actions.
